The earthquake of 2015 largely destroyed the village of Thade. The school in the village, which is attended by up to 120 children from surrounding villages such as Langtang and Rasuwa, was also largely destroyed. Thade is supported together with the Austrian-Nepalese organisation Chay Ya, which started building the school there after the earthquake and was able to finalise it with Roots for Life.
Education is still a luxury for many children in Nepal, especially for girls. With individual scholarships, Roots for Life supports girls who would otherwise not be able to attend school. All costs are covered: uniform, books, school meals, events, examination fees and much more. Especially single women are enabled to send their children (further on) to school.
Our role
Together with its partner Chay Ya Nepal & Chay Ya Austria, Roots for Life is financing the final construction phase of the Shree Sarawati L.S. School in Thade: three classrooms and solid toilets with washing facilities (separated for boys and girls). The toilets were completed in spring 2018. The missing premises in summer 2018. For the financial support we could win Soroptimist International (Union Switzerland and France).
We have developed our own process to support our scholarship holders: Through regular meetings with parents (especially mothers), teachers and the girls themselves, the life situation of the scholarship holders is closely monitored and important topics are discussed with the family. Together we discuss what the girls really need in order to work optimally on their education. In this way, individual consideration can be given to special situations. Our local employee Kusang Tamang visits the girls regularly and hands over the materials.
